We are pleased to announce that Xona has teamed with BrainXell, Inc. to further develop our in vitro model for neuroinflammation-induced tau pathophysiology and will present our findings at the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS) International Conference in San Diego, CA Jan. 25-29, 2025. Activation of human iPSC-derived microglia compartmentalized in XonaChips®
Activation of microglia occurs in Alzheimer’s disease and is indicative of neuroninflammation. Recently we co-cultured human iPSC-derived cortical glutamatergic neurons expressing eGFP together with human iPSC-derived microglia (BrainXell) and found robust activation of microglia in response to the inflammatory molecule, LPS. Further data shows that neurons exhibit AD-like cellular pathology in response to this inflammatory insult.

Growing hiPSC motor neurons in the X4 XonaChip®
Our newest X4 chip (catalog # XC-SF150-X4) uses fewer neurons per culture unit, thereby increasing sample size when using a finite amount of cells. Cell loading is also optimized and the chip is a great improvement for automated imaging studies. Recently we cultured hiPSC-derived motor neurons expressing eGFP (BrainXell, BX-0101) for 27 days in our X4 chips. The result is the beautiful image in this post.
Introducing the X4 XonaChip® for Higher Throughput Applications
Increasing throughput continues to be an enormous need for neuron-based compartmentalized culture platforms. Current approaches using PDMS are not adequate to create higher density platforms because of registration issues due to shrinkage making automated imaging next to impossible. Xona Microfluidics has overcome this limitation by developing a new injection molded XonaChip called the X4 chip. This chip contains multiple sample units that are always the same location and size–a huge advance for automated imaging and drug discovery efforts. Further, these chips (the size of standard microscope slides) can be combined in a plate holder to yield sixteen (16) sample units. Check out this post to learn more.
Growing BrainXell hiPSC neurons in XonaChips® and Silicone (PDMS) Devices
eGFP-expressing human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) derived glutamatergic neurons from BrainXell grew for over 35 days in XonaChips® and Silicone Devices. Extensive axonal growth was observed by 7 days.
Xona Attends Triangle SfN Annual Meeting 2022 in Cary, North Carolina
Xona had a booth at the Triangle Society for Neuroscience (SfN) Annual Meeting in Cary on Sept. 9, 2022. We were pleased to attend sessions by prominent neuroscientists, and to inform attendees about Xona’s products and services. Xona provided free samples of its products to neuroscientists who requested them. We made great contacts regarding our contract research services, and look forward to future meetings and involvement with Triangle SfN!
